Far downwind of the rustling citrus trees along the Yangtze river, a little golden ball drifts down a hill before coming to a rest in the sand near the riverbank. Like the plump, sweet but sour yuzu fruit dropping from the trees, this little lumpy ball is venerated by the native peoples of the region for both its uniqueness and alleged medicinal properties. However, unlike the juicy citrus fruit falling from the branches of densely growing trees, this little ball unfurls to reveal one of the most distinctive and peculiar animals in the world: the pangolin, the planet's only scaled mammal.
